Christophe Valtaud, Cellar Master of the House of Martell
A native of the Cognac region, the son and grandson of winegrowers, Christophe Valtaud is the latest in a long line of Cellar Masters who, since Jean Martell in 1715, have perpetuated the distinctive style of Martell cognac.
Just 38 when he succeeded Benoît Fil as Cellar Master in 2016, Christophe Valtaud gained an understanding of the vineyards and terroirs of Cognac from his earliest years, later enhancingit with university study.
As Cellar Master, Christophe Valtaud, who previously managed the Martell vineyards, is central to the House’s savoir-faire. His role enables him, not only to bring together his three areas of expertise – terroir, distillation and blending – but to nurture a dialogue between them.
In entrusting Christophe Valtaud with the key mission of Cellar Master, Martell restated its commitment to keeping local heritage at the heart of the House. His innovative approach has resulted in the creation of new expressions of cognac, such as Martell Cordon Bleu Extra and Martell VS Single Distillery, which both respect the historic style of the House and take it forwards into the future.
