A story of courage, perseverance and “Caractère”, that started in 1715 with Jean Martell and carried on for nearly 300 years of dedicated, patient craftsmanship in distillation, blending and ageing of the best cognacs.

Christophe Valtaud, Cellar Master

Martell Caractère pays tribute to the daring spirit of our visionary founder, Jean Martell.  As an immigrant to France, he founded the House from scratch at the age of 21, in 1715. He proved to be a discerning entrepreneur with exceptional strength of character, overcoming several bankruptcies to eventually develop his business into the leading prestige Cognac house it has been ever since.

Everything in Martell Caractère reclaims the spirit of Jean Martell, starting with the harsh soils of the Domaine Jean Martell which create the most tasteful wines and eaux-de-vie.

These grapes from the toughest vineyards are distilled twice without leas and aged in fine grain French oak barrel according to the 300 years of expertise of the Martell House. The result is a refined blend of boldness & refinement.

CARACTERE Tasting notes

Tasting notes

The initial nose is characterised by exceptional freshness and great liveliness, with the harmonious pairing of notes of pear and citrus – lemon, grapefruit and tangerine peel – delicately heightened and rounded by notes of sweet spices (cinnamon, clove) and vanilla.
After swirling, the nose becomes richer with more pronounced candied notes of prunes and raisins.

Martell Caractère can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in your finest cocktails.

The mouth is at once sharp, frank, and full, with distinct lemon and tangerine-peel notes that structure the mid-palate and support the long finish that develops generous notes of pastries and plum jam.

Martell Caractère can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in your finest cocktails.
